Registro .it, the .it domain registry operated by Italy’s National Research Council in Pisa, took a significant step in promoting the digital side of tourism at the BTM (Business Tourism Management) Italia 2025 event in Bari, held from February 25 to February 28. This event focused on the future of tourism, digital transformation, and artificial intelligence, providing an ideal platform to explore the intersection of Italy’s unique digital identity and digital tourism.

At the event, Registro .it showcased its commitment with a dedicated booth, emphasizing its role in supporting Italian businesses on their digital growth journey. The .it domain is not merely a web address but a symbol of quality, trust, and authenticity—crucial for businesses looking to stand out globally while staying connected to Italy’s rich cultural heritage. As international travel surged in 2023, the importance of this digital identity became even more evident as tourists flocked back to Italy’s iconic destinations.
Registro .it also hosted the session titled “Il tuo viaggio parte dal .it – Il digital tourism in Italia: temi, numeri e trend” (Your Journey Begins with .it – Digital Tourism in Italy: Themes, Numbers, and Trends). This event provided an opportunity for dialogue among industry experts, including Edoardo Colombo, Advisor of Innovation & Trends, and Rodolfo Baggio, Professor of Tourism Analytics and Digital Strategies at Bocconi University. These experts shared insights into the crucial role of online presence for businesses and the transformative impact of digital technologies, especially artificial intelligence, in the tourism industry.
Maurizio Martinelli, head of the Technology Development and Systems Unit at Registro .it, presented findings from the “Tourism in the Net” (TINe) report, showcasing how Italian tourism businesses are establishing their online presence. According to the data, 12% of all .it domain registrations are in the tourism sector, totaling over 160,000 sites. The breakdown revealed:
These trends are especially evident in Puglia, where the lodging sector makes up 60% of all .it domain registrations. Additionally, 61% of businesses in the region have their own .it domain, while restaurants represent 23%, with 25% (over 1,500) of them using a .it domain. The tour operator and transport sector mirrors the national trend, accounting for 8% of the region’s .it sites.
Registrars—companies contracted with Registro .it to provide internet services—shared their perspectives at the event. Gianni Buonsante, CEO of Ingenia Direct srl, and Salvatore Malvaso of Intendo srl discussed the strategic importance of .it domains in enhancing businesses’ online visibility. Alongside them, Gianpaolo Chiarella, Founder of Teseo.it srl, engaged with professionals and businesses, highlighting the competitive advantage of having a .it domain for creating a strong digital identity.
The value of a .it domain extends beyond the tourism sector, offering growth opportunities for businesses in fashion, design, gastronomy, and more. Registro .it remains committed to supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)—the backbone of Italy’s economy—on their digital transformation journey. This initiative aims to solidify the .it domain as a symbol of digital identity, contributing to the global success of Italian businesses at future events.
