il Il-Grupp Lufthansa has reaffirmed its position as the leading airline network at Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER), concluding 2024 with a commanding market share. The Group’s airlines, including Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings, and SunExpress, operated approximately 30% of all flights to and from BER. This dominance firmly establishes the Lufthansa Group as the airport’s top carrier, with the nearest competitor managing just 17% of flights.

Record Passenger Numbers and Extensive Connectivity

Throughout 2024, the Lufthansa Group transported an impressive 6.4 million passengers through BER. With one of the Group’s aircraft departing every 15 minutes on average, its six airlines collectively offered up to 500 direct flights per week to nearly 60 destinations. Eurowings played a significant role, connecting the German capital to around 45 destinations across Europe, North Africa, and the Gulf region. Furthermore, the Lufthansa Group’s global network allows travelers to reach over 290 destinations worldwide via its five key hubs.

Expansion Amid Industry Contraction

While some airlines have announced plans to scale back operations at BER in 2025, the Lufthansa Group is bucking the trend with continued growth. SWISS, a Group subsidiary, recently introduced daily non-stop flights between Berlin and Geneva, boosting connectivity since October 2024. Meanwhile, Eurowings is set to expand its capacity by 12% for the upcoming summer season. New routes to Bilbao, Corfu, Faro, and Newcastle will provide Berlin residents and visitors with exciting new travel options.

A Historic Bond with Berlin

Lufthansa’s roots in Berlin date back to its founding in the city in 1926. Today, the airline’s relationship with the German capital extends beyond flights. Berlin is one of only two locations, alongside Frankfurt, where the Lufthansa Group operates all key business segments. Approximately 2,000 Lufthansa Group employees call Berlin home, underscoring the city’s importance to the company’s operations and heritage.

As the Lufthansa Group continues to expand its footprint at Berlin Brandenburg Airport, it solidifies its role not just as a transportation leader, but also as a vital part of Berlin’s economic and cultural landscape.
